What’s your parenting style?

July 8, 2011 at 12:55 am 4 comments

Are you the kind of parent that says No and means it, or do you change your mind based on how much attitude your teen gives you? Teens are smart people, after all, they are products of great people – Us! Remember that we are not here to be friends with our teens. We have to set boundaries to help our teens grow into responsible adults.

What are your thoughts?

No has to mean no. If your parenting style is inconsistent, your children will take advantage. They need to know that they have boundaries and those boundaries have been set by you.

I agree with Jim. Consistency is key. Not so much because your children will take advantage of you, but because they will get mixed signals and get confused as to what the message you are trying to convey really is.

If I were to answer this question fully, I would have to rewrite a post I just published on my blog, and if you are interested in reading it, you can find it at http://thebehavioralchild.com/what-kind-of-parent-are-you/

Lastly, I agree with Lynn that the first job of parents is parenting their child.

According to Megan’s post, I selected D, I am a behavioral parent. My parenting style is high demand and high responsiveness. Children need guidelines and boundaries, yet there has to be room for responsiveness to “paint on the walls”. In our household, kids knew the rules, but weren’t punished if they did something outside of the boundaries that had not been previously id’d as a wrong.
