SAFETY WITHOUT HOVERING ⛔️

Your child may be living away from home, but they’re still your child.
I think about my own college years. We didn’t always think about safety the way we do today. We’d take the dark roads to the college “down the road.” And when I couldn’t sleep, a friend and I would sometimes walk along the railroad tracks late at night, talking and sorting through our thoughts.
Years later, when I was living in my first apartment, my mother asked me, “Do you know any of your neighbors?”
I had been living there almost a year.
At the time, I thought, Why does that matter?
Now I understand exactly what she was asking.
She wasn’t trying to control me. She was teaching me to think about my safety.
Today, our young adults are navigating college, work, new neighborhoods, transportation and relationships—often without us physically nearby.
The world has changed, but one thing hasn’t: they still need us to help them think about their safety.
It means we prepare them.
Talk about:
📍 Emergency contacts
Who should they call if something goes wrong? Who should you call if you can’t reach them?
📍 Campus, workplace & neighborhood safety
Do they know where to go, who to contact, and what resources are available if they feel unsafe?
📍 Transportation
How are they getting home after a late shift, event, or night out? What’s their backup plan?
📍 Checking in
What does staying connected look like for both of you?
The goal isn’t to control them.
It’s to prepare them.
Because giving your child independence doesn’t mean stopping the conversation about safety.
It means helping them become adults who know how to protect themselves—and when to reach out for help.
Safety without hovering.
Connection without control. ❤️
