How Do You Teach Kindness to Your Kid?

November 16, 2022 at 10:45 pm Leave a comment

I always wanted my children to be good, kind people. I wanted them to show compassion toward their friends and classmates. I felt kindness was important as part of their character, and as believers of God.

That compassion didn’t just happen because I wanted it; I had to show them what kindness looked like by being kind to them and the people around me. Some of our teachable moments were family events like handing out meals on Thanksgiving Day, participating in toy drives, or making meals for new neighbors.

Watching the words that I used when I was disappointed 😔 in their behavior was a challenge because I grew up in a critical household and I didn’t hear kind words a lot.

Here are 3 ways to teach kindness to your children:

1. Respond quickly to your child’s needs. Show empathy for their emotions, e.g., “I’m sorry!

2. Model how to show empathy.

3. Talk with your child about emotions, describing and labeling them.

November is known as the Giving month. As organizations ask for donations, use this time of Thanksgiving to share teachable moments of kindness with your children. You’ll be amazed at how they spread kindness to their friends and people they meet.
